as no surprise, EMC Reports 19% Increase in Second-Quarter Profit and Achieves 10% Growth in Quarterly Revenue (The 1oth Consecutive Quarter of Double-Digit Year-over-Year Growth). As is typical for any EMCer, when the prior quarter earnings are announced, we are well into the next quarter...
This quarter was a little different. Sure, EMC pre-announced earnings along with some organizational changes, but even those types of changes can be expected. What I didn’t expect was for the newly appointed EMC President, COO & CFO, David Goulden to review the EMC Flash Strategy during the investor call. This is the strategy that I have personally been evangelizing for the better part of a year now. Here is the audio and slide directly from the Earnings Call:

The key to the story is simple, leverage industry leading technologies combined with what I call the EMC Patent wall. If you’ve ever toured an EMC Facility in Hopkinton, you undoubtedly walked past a wall full of EMC Patents, that intellectual property allows EMC engineers to leverage EMCs heritage. That allows us to quickly take technologies from one business unit and apply it to another.
When Mr. Goulden refers to the second half support of ‘In-line Dedup”, it’s easy to see how impressive the patent wall is. EMCs patent library includes patents from all EMC Acquisitions. As you could imagine Dedup is just the beginning. The EMC Product portfolio is also highlighted. As previously reviewed here at www.insideflash.com EMC was first to ship Enterprise Flash Technologies into our existing arrays back in 2008. That Hybrid array continues to support our customers today and is the best fit for mixed workloads. A little Flash here goes a long way to reducing cost and increasing performance.
While some workloads may require very low latency with 100% of data being considered hot (think large scale VDI deployments 100s of thousands of seats), that’s where an all Flash array fits the portfolio and why EMC acquired XtremIO earlier this year. On the server side we have VFCache, (or as know before GA, Lightning). What follows lightning? Thunder of course, thunder epresenting Server Network Flash leveraging the same EMC VFCache Software via a high speed PCIe based network!
